DAY ONE

We had a fabulous first day at Summer Academy!  To begin the day, we interviewed each other to learn more about our new classmates.  Then we shared our favorite stories and used them to fuel our ideas for our own stories.  Finally, we began drawing and writing about who we see as the protagonist(s) and antagonist(s) in our stories.

Tomorrow we will host author and illustrator David LaRochelle who will tell us about his journey as an author and guide us through an illustrating lesson.

CONVERSATION STARTERS

Today we introduced much of the vocabulary that we will be working with as we write our stories in the coming weeks.  Mr. Underhill and I were both impressed by how quickly students caught on to the terminology and how many were already familiar with several of the terms.  Some of the words we discussed include:  protagonist, antagonist, conflict, setting, motivation, climax, resolution, onomatopoeia, personification, irony and several other figures of speech.
